If your animal eyes ever end up looking a bit flat or lifeless, this one’s for you. In this video, I’m sharing a simple trick I use in almost every painting—laying down a bit of gold leaf under the eyes to give them a soft, glowy depth that catches the light just right. (Don’t have gold leaf? You can get a similar effect with metallic paint too!) Hi, I’m Dani Trudeau—painter, teacher, and animal nerd. I run The Wildlife Painting Academy, where 1,300+ students have learned to paint wildlife that actually looks real. Watch the video now to see how to add an extra special glow to your animal eye paintings ⬇️⬇️
Sometimes painting animals feels SO hard. You have to keep track of colour, values, anatomy, fur detail, making sure those eyes look right, and so much more... But what if we are making things more difficult than they need to be? This is something I personally learned the hard way, but I'm here to share a shift in your art process that will make things SO much easier (you can learn from my mistakes!) Hi, I’m Dani Trudeau 👋 painter, teacher, and animal nerd. I run The Wildlife Painting Academy, where 1,300+ students have learned to paint wildlife that actually looks real. Sometimes a few simple shifts in your painting process can make a world of difference, so I wanted to share one of my biggest game-changers with you today. ➡️ Watch the whole video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t_6ao0eQ1E
Most artists think realistic fur comes from painting more hairs. That’s usually the moment painting animals starts feeling exhausting. You zoom into the reference photo. Switch brushes 40 times. Obsess over tiny strands. Try to “perfect” every patch of texture. And somehow the painting still feels flat. Not because you lack talent. But because that’s not actually how we see fur. When you look at a real animal, your brain is not processing every individual hair. It’s reading light. Shadow. Soft transitions. Shape. That’s why a blurry photo can still feel realistic from across the room. Your brain fills in the detail automatically when the values are working. A lot of artists reverse that process. They try to force realism through detail first because tiny hairs feel productive. Like progress. But realism does not come from stuffing the painting with information. 👉 It comes from clear values and believable form. That’s why so many fur paintings end up stiff. The artist is trying to explain every strand instead of letting the viewer’s brain participate in the image. And oddly enough, the more detail people add too early, the less believable the fur becomes. Softness comes from the structure underneath. The way light rolls across the animal. The way the form turns in space. The value shifts underneath the texture. That’s what makes fur feel alive. Not 50,000 tiny brushstrokes 😅 Once I understood this, everything changed for me. I stopped trying to “paint fur” and started painting light first. Now fur feels like the finishing touch instead of the thing I’m fighting through the entire painting. And honestly, painting wildlife became way more enjoyable after that 💛 If you want help with this, I made a free Cheat Sheet that breaks down how to build realistic fur without getting overwhelmed by detail. I’ll message you a link if you comment “GUIDE”

I wish someone had told me sooner that struggling doesn't mean you're not a painter. It just means you haven't found your method yet. For a long time, I painted animals the hard way — jumping straight into detail, overcomplicating every step, wondering why my work never looked the way I imagined it. I tried tutorials. I read books. Nothing quite stuck. What changed everything wasn't trying harder. It was simplifying. Once I learned to slow down, build from values, and work in layers...everything started to click. And the paintings I'd been chasing for years finally started appearing on my canvas. I built the Wildlife Painting Academy to give you that shortcut. Inside, you get a complete, structured path to painting realistic wildlife — from your very first brushstroke to the kind of finished piece you're proud to share. And you get all of this from day one: ✅ 50+ full-length, real-time wildlife painting tutorials ✅ New tutorials added every month ✅ Oil Painting 101, Fur Painting 101, Glazing 101 ✅ A full learning path (no more wondering what to do next) ✅ Monthly Q&As and personal art critiques This isn't about being naturally gifted. It never was. It's about having someone in your corner who's already walked this road, and who genuinely wants to see you paint the animals you love. There was a moment I almost gave up on painting animals altogether. Not because I didn't love it. But because no matter how hard I tried, my paintings just…didn't look right. The fur felt flat. Inside, I walk you through a clear, step-by-step method for painting realistic animals — even if you're starting from scratch, even if you've been painting for years and still feel stuck. If your animal fur always looks flat or “off”…it probably has nothing to do with your brushes or your talent. Most artists try to fix fur by adding more detail. More hairs. More texture. More tiny strokes. But realistic fur doesn’t come from detail first… 👉 It comes from values. In this video, I’m breaking down the simple shift that makes animal fur look soft, dimensional, and realistic without overworking your paintings. If you paint pets, or wildlife, this will completely change the way you approach fur. I also made a free guide called The Fur Fix that'll give you some of my best tips for painting realistic animal fur. 👉 Grab the guide here: https://wildlifepaintingacademy.com/fur/
