NEW MUSIC RELEASE TOMORROW (today for you) The song is called 'Blues & Stuff...', and it's the first single from the upcoming album of the same name. A funny thing happened on the way to this song. It was set to be a very cool session. My old pal and bandmate, Vince Converse, was in town, so I invited a few of our usual suspects to Bong Island Sound for one of our rhythm section recording jams we've been doing to create 7-10 new albums in several genres. Vince was travelling with his pal, Jamaica Jenkins, and showed up with her and sax miester Ron Aprea Jr in tow. Corey Tice had said he could make it, but, needed to show up an hour later than our projected start time, so I invited John Chupin to play drums for a while, so we would not have to miss an hour of Vince. After changing our usual gear and micing arrangements, Chaz and I spread out and put Vince between us, while Roger put Ron into a seperate room so we could get pure sax with none of the other instruments bleeding through the sax mic. We proceeded to record six jams, and a duet piece that Vince and Ron had previously worked out. Since that day, two of those jams were deemed to be worthy of the mostly instrumental jazz album we're doing, and, four have become songs in the more traditional sense. This song came from the very last jam. It started as a mellow, funky thing, which kind of reminded me of the band, 'STUFF', and went on to become a wild, extremely musical jam that I couldn't describe with words. We all hurried our way to the listening room, knowing we had just created something fantastically musical. It was not to be. Roger's cat, Shiloh, was laying on the recording computer's keyboard, and had stopped the recording after the first minute or so. All we had left was a bit of the early mellow funk jam, and the memories of a killer jam which was lost in the ether. When I got the tracks home, I listened closely to all of them to determine whether any of the sections could be easily turned into song shapes that I could add lyrics and melodies to as I usually do. Remember, on this big project, I am not walking into the studio with songs already written. Its like mining for gold. The band or session band is improvising, sometimes with my directions, sometimes taking a part played by Roger or Chaz and developing it more, and sometimes totally free without any preconcieved idea where we're going. Then, I fly into those clouds of music, like a miner into a tunnel, and mine for song ideas. These tracks were rich with songwriting opportunities, but the last one hit me in a special way. Although the big jam was 90% gone, thanks to Shiloh the cat, the small section leftover had an unmistakable groove, and had come together from the start. That doesn't always happen. Sometimes it takes a minute to find the groove, especially with more than a few musicians. Not only that, but, Ron and Vince had each played some serious solo parts during that first minute, mostly playing on top of each other, and obscuring what the other had played. The next step was to copy the whole thing and paste it right after itself to make the minute or so into two or three. Then, I did it agains. Again, I muted the soloing, and just sat back, listening to the groove. It really did sound like 'STUFF', For the uninitiated - 'STUFF' was a jazz fusion band active in the 1970s and 1980s, featuring session musicians such as Gordon Edwards, Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree, Chris Parker and Steve Gadd. You should check them out. I had started this jam with an abbreviated blues progression, leaving out the 5. It remained in that form until way past Shiloh's kitty cat editing decision. Cool. Hmmm. Stuff... Blues... I was on my way. I hope you enjoy 'Blues & Stuff...'. The jam was for us. The song/single is for you.
