Dedicated to my soulmate and wife Roisin and cat, Jessie and especially my Mother, Pauline Gallagher So what is a drone and what does it have to do with music or even this playlist? The actual dictionary definition of a drone is defined as a “continuous low and dull low frequency sound”. The annoying drone of a washing machine, the hum from cars in rush hour traffic. Your pita boss droning on at work, another entirely annoying aspect of droning. How about the positive side to droning? The moment you are conceived, your Mother's bodily noises and heartbeat are what's heard in utero. The comforting drone of your parents and family's voices next door as you go to sleep as a child. Or the comforting bass drone you hear below your bedroom at nightme as your brother is blasting Echoes or War Pigs. The Recording genius, Martin Hannett was highly alert to this phenomenon. He was known to record silence on the moors with microphones held high in the air to capture natural ambience. He also Incorporated Industrial noise of 70's Manchester, the "ghosts" of the city—clanking, crashing, and industrial textures that reflected the urban landscape. Mantras, praying, yoga chants, birds singing, church bells chiming, clocks ticking; a cat’s healing low frequency purr, which has been shown to heal tissue and broken bones. All are drones as are the Irish Uileann pipes, the Scottish bagpipes, the sitar and many more musical instruments. In fact, the opposite of drone or noise is danger: when birds stopping chirping it can signal a sign of danger in nature. All matter vibrates at a certain frequency, we are bathed in sound, whether consciously or unconsciously throughout all our lives, from conception till we take our final breath. Well, how is this related to music? Droning in music is the sustained, continuous sound of a note or chord throughout a piece which acts as a tonal foundation. It provides harmonic stability, hypnotic atmospheres and ambient textures. A sonic anchor which creates a meditative or immersive, atmospheric feel, common in ambient, folk, and Indian classical music (e.g., using a tanpura). It's famously used by bands like Velvet Underground or Faust to modern drone metal bands like Sunn O))) in order to build intense, resonant soundscapes. Contemporary examples abound: Lankum, "Dig my Grave"; Olivia Rodrigo – "good 4 u"; SZA – "Kill Bill"; Billie Eilish – "Bad Guy; Charli XCX – "Out of My Head". Drones are infinite, we are always consciously or unconsciously experiencing them; you could say they represent a finite segment of infinity. So in that respect, they have a universality as we're all made from the same Crooked Timbre of Humanity. I was so delighted that the writer, Harry Sword, wrote a book using the theme of drones in order to explore music history. And this playlist contains most of his references as well as my own and my friends'. I’ve created this DRONE playlist, a companion piece to the book, Monolithic Undertow. As I was reading the book, I kept having to put it down and check the musician and bands Sword was referring to. But now you don't have to. I've ordered the playlist chronologically from early to contemporary. And of course, it's a subjective playlist based on my own tastes and preferences. From Bo Diddley to mighty Sunn O))) to Orbital. It's all drone. I took the liberty of adding a few of my own favourites too as well as asking hardcore fans in various reddit forumd. Feel free to add to your own collection and edit according to taste; different strokes for different folks.... Music should be for everyone. If you like these tunes, order them on vinyl or CD. Avoid streaming if you can. Also, support live music and but artists' merchandise. Fight back against the drones. This share is NOT for self-promotion or self-aggrandisement.
